Again lighter conditions today. Originally planned to take out the 85L
freestyle wave, which would have been perfect with the 5.3, but it had a
small hole in the front. The 79L wave was about to be used so slightly
reluctantly took out the 78L wave.
A new 2003 5.3 Zone was free in the club sail rack. I had used it once
before several weeks ago and remembered liking it a lot so decided to try
it again instead of my own 5.2. At first I didn't change the harness lines
to my own, and after one run out and back realised again why I should have
done. They were too short/too long/generally mucho crap. So after the first
run back in, scooted back up to the club quickly to get my own lines and
then put them on, leaving the original lines on the boom right at the end
near the clew since I couldn't be arsed with faffing around trying to take
them off.
I was concerned that the board/fin would be too small and I was right.
Despite being nicely powered up on the 5.3, was again having issues with
staying upwind. Managed OK for the most part but it was hard work. Again it
limited my willingness and ability to go for stuff, so performance-wise the
session wasn't particularly satisfying.
Konan Lang of PWA freestyle world tour fame was out on the water at the
same time as me. Was interesting sailing near him and watching the crazy
tricks he was trying to pĂșll off (often successfully) as well as his
general sailing technique. Particularly interesting was watching the
technique he used in order to squeeze his board upwind quickly in a small
area...sort of by repeatedly bearing away a fraction then pumping the sail
whilst simultaneously driving off his back foot. Maybe I might try that....
Probably the most curiously statisfying part of my session was when he was
just in front of me, to turn round he went for some wierd contorted
slidy-spinny manouver but fell in, then I managed to pull off a dry gybe
(just...) and sailed back past him in the other direction whilst he was
still floundering around in the water trying to waterstart. Ha ha call
yourself a pro and you can't even turn around.... Needless to say he reemed
himself soon after by launching into a plethora of various
spock-McTwisty-540-type manouvers. Fair play to the young whipper-snapper,
I suppose I'll let him off.
